Take a 'Sip-Trip' through NC Wine Country

From the mountains to the coast, the wine industry in North Carolina is growing. Vineyards have sprouted all across North Carolina and the business that was rendered all but dead during prohibition is revived and thriving once again.

I had the opportunity to speak with Lauren Jeffcoat of VisitNCWineCountry.com. Jeffcoat's enthusiasm about the resurgence of grape growing and wine production in the state is evident when she speaks. She's dedicated her website to spreading the word about the award-winning offerings of the Tarheel state.

As her website notes, "from backyard cabins to Italian Chateaus, North Carolina Wine Country has something for everyone."

In addition to spreading the good news about North Carolina wines, twice a year Jeffcoat organizes Sip Trips bringing visitors directly to the source of her passion.

What's a Sip Trip?

A Sip Trip is a tour of multiple North Carolina wineries. Each tour is different, but typically takes in 4 wineries where guests enjoy seeing vineyards, touring the grounds, viewing where the wine is made and tasting samples. Each stop has its own unique offering and personality. The first stop will usually include lunch and dinner is provided at the last stop of the day.

What form of transportation is provided?

Sip Trippers enjoy traveling between wineries on a chartered bus. In order to keep the group comfortable and a manageable size, the tour is limited to 30 people. Oh, and in case you were wondering, there is a restroom on board.

Where do the Sip Trips go?

Because there are so many wineries in North Carolina, each Sip Trip highlights a different area. The upcoming Spring 2015 Sip Trip will feature wineries in the Yadkin Valley on May 2-3.   A Sip Trip to explore Western, North Carolina wineries is in the works for the fall.

What's included in the price of the Sip Trip?

The Sip Trip is an all inclusive trip which covers all wine tastings, meals, transportation and a wine country goodie bag. Packages start at $170 per person. If you require accommodations, the spring Sip Trip will be departing from and returning to the Fairfield Inn and Suites at Elkin, NC

Who's a Sip Trip for?

A Sip Trip is a wonderful weekend get-away for couples.  It's a fun girls weekend.  It's ideal for anybody wanting to learn more about North Carolina wines. Regardless of your level of wine expertise, these trips offer something for everyone.

Sip Trippers get the opportunity to meet with winery owners, wine makers as well as the chance to meet other wine enthusiasts. According to Jeffcoats, the Sip Trips are so much fun that 50% of her guests are return visitors. She also notes the tours fill up quickly.

Bottom Line

Bottom line, a Sip Trip is a fantastic way to experience first-hand several award-winning North Carolina wineries that are putting NC wines and NC Wine Country on the world map. A Sip Trip makes it possible to travel in comfort and explore a burgeoning wine region all while learning, tasting, and enjoying.
