Tucked away in Burnfoot, County Donegal, Wild Ireland is a unique tourist destination — and so much more. This remarkable sanctuary is home to rescued wild animals who’ve been lovingly returned to their natural habitat. Adding to its magic, the park is set within a restored Celtic rainforest, offering a glimpse of the lush woodlands that once blanketed Ireland. I visited while attending TBEX Europe 2025 and immediately fell in love with this incredible wildlife center. Here’s what I discovered — and why Wild Ireland absolutely deserves a spot on your Donegal travel itinerary.

What is Wild Ireland?
From the moment you walk through the gates, it’s obvious Wild Ireland is something special. Founded by conservationist Killian McLaughlin, the sanctuary is the realization of a lifelong dream — a safe, natural haven for animals rescued from circuses and roadside zoos to live freely once again.
Set within a true Celtic rainforest, it’s as much about restoring Ireland’s native landscape as it is about protecting its wildlife. Blending breathtaking scenery with animal rescue and a sense of purpose, Wild Ireland stands out as one of Donegal’s most unforgettable attractions.
It’s a beautiful reminder of what can happen when passion, purpose, and perseverance come together — all sparked by unrelenting enthusiasm.

Meet the Wildlife
The stars of the show at Wild Ireland are the animals.
Each animal has a story to tell. They’ve come from all kinds of situations, but once they arrive here, they’re family. Every one of them has a name, a history, and a home in this sanctuary — and visitors get the wonderful opportunity to meet them and see them thriving in their natural habitats.
Every distinct habitat is home to some amazing creatures. Follow the path and step into the Woodland Wonders to see animals such as the gentle sika deer or hopping wallabies. Move on to encounter some of the Irish Heritage Species, like the wild hare or the cunning and curious red foxes.
Each habitat houses animals that have been a part of Ireland’s wildlife heritage. And although some are no longer found in the wild, Wild Ireland works to educate, inform, and reintroduce these creatures who once roamed the Emerald Isle.

Ancient Celtic Rainforest
Another highlight is the ancient Celtic Rainforest.
Ireland is renowned for its rolling hills and lush green landscape. However, I was surprised to discover that centuries ago, it’s estimated that up to 80% of the Emerald Isle was actually covered in forest.
At Wild Ireland, they are doing their part to restore a balance by removing invasive plant species and replacing them with native species. In turn, these native species provide natural habitats for a variety of birds, mammals, and invertebrates.
Additionally, the team at Wild Ireland has planted more than 10,000 trees. In doing so, they not only provide rescued animals with a safe, natural home, but they’re also helping to restore a piece of Ireland’s ancient Celtic rainforest.

Feeding Time at Wild Ireland
A standout moment at Wild Ireland is feeding time. We were lucky that our visit coincided with dinner time for many of the animals. Wolves, lynx, wild boar, and brown bears enjoyed their evening meals as we watched on, learning about the animals and their feeding habits.
Many of these animals, like the brown bears, are being taught how to forage for their food. Behaviors that once came naturally to them have become unfamiliar due to their previous living circumstances. It’s eye-opening and fascinating to watch as they hunt for food.
We were also fortunate to have the founder, Killian McLaughlin, and his team of experts on hand to educate us. I came away with such an appreciation for the animals and the people at Wild Ireland who are making an impact.

“Wild Ireland offers several ways to get involved and support their mission, whether through donations, memberships, merchandise sales, animal adoptions, corporate sponsorships, or helping with bear rescues. They welcome and appreciate any form of support. To learn more or find out how you can make a difference, visit their website.”

Visiting Wild Ireland in Donegal
Whether you’re traveling with kids or just young at heart, Wild Ireland is a fun and family-friendly highlight while exploring Donegal.
The park is open Thursday through Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, with last entry at 3:00. You’ll want to pre-book your tickets online and allow at least two hours to fully experience the animals and the park. Likewise, you will want to consult their website to find times for the Keeper Talks. These talks are scheduled throughout the day and provide wonderful insights and information that add so much to your visit to Wild Ireland.
Feeding time is a great time to visit with the animals. Feeding times change from day to day, so make sure to check when you arrive — you won’t want to miss it!
On a practical note, there is a gift shop, café, and ample free parking available. Should you wish to bring a picnic with you, there is a designated picnic area. Just remember to be safe and keep all food in those designated areas.
Proper footwear is a must for walking the trails and navigating the landscape. If mobility is an issue, the trails through the park are paved and flat, thus relatively accessible. And of course, you will be outdoors, so dress for the weather. It was cool and raining during my visit, so I was glad I dressed accordingly.

What I Liked About Wild Ireland
I loved seeing all of the amazing animals that have been rescued and are being rehabilitated at Wild Ireland. It’s especially entertaining watching them at feeding time. It’s also fun to enjoy something that, while a tourist attraction, is a bit off the beaten path.
I also noted that the park is extremely well laid out and designed to allow visitors to get a safe yet close-up view of the animals. It’s especially conducive to learning their stories, their history in Ireland, and their significance in nature.
It’s also just plain fun being in the woods. With Ireland’s forested land covering anywhere from as little as 1% to 11%, depending on the source, simply wandering beneath a canopy of trees feels like a rare little luxury.
What I truly loved was seeing how passionate the staff at Wild Ireland are about rescuing, rehabilitating, and educating. Their dedication is evident in every moment spent at this unique wildlife sanctuary.

Parting Thoughts
Situated on the border between Derry City and Donegal, Wild Ireland is one of those places that, while not as famous as other destinations in Ireland, is still extremely important and impactful.
From one man’s concern for preserving and caring for Ireland’s native species and environment, an amazing ethical wildlife experience has arisen.
It’s a pleasure visiting an attraction where the experience not only benefits the animals but also allows you to learn and actively participate in a meaningful mission.
Like their website says, “Our ongoing mission is to rescue and rehabilitate animals needing sanctuary and help restore our natural environment through native planting. We aim to inspire young people to be the conservationists of the future through educating our guests on local and global conservation issues.”
That’s a powerful mission, and at Wild Ireland in Donegal, they’re truly making a difference. If you ever have the chance to visit, it’s an experience that not only connects you with nature but also supports a cause that’s close to their heart.
