Sometimes the best discoveries aren’t planned. While exploring Yeats Country in County Sligo, I happened upon the charming seaside village of Strandhill almost by accident. What began as a simple stop along the way quickly became one of the most memorable places I visited in Ireland, and one that has called me back ever since. Set along the Wild Atlantic Way, Strandhill combines magnificent coastal scenery, world-class surfing, inviting cafés and restaurants, and the kind of authentic Irish atmosphere that makes you want to stay just a little bit longer.
Falling in Love with Strandhill
Strandhill in County Sligo sits just beyond Ireland’s well-worn tourist trail, and I think that’s part of its charm. While this stretch of the country’s northwestern coast is often overlooked, it rewards visitors with spectacular scenery, a welcoming atmosphere, and an authenticity that’s becoming harder to find.
There is something unforgettable about sitting in the shadow of Knocknarea, sipping a cup of tea, and enjoying a warm scone while watching the world slow down around you. It’s one of those simple travel moments that stays with you long after you’ve returned home and makes you want to tell everyone, “You have to experience this for yourself.”
The relaxed pace of life, the dramatic Atlantic coastline, and the gorgeous weather, which, as anyone who has traveled to Ireland knows, is a rare and wonderful gift, made our time in Strandhill especially memorable. In fact, the village inspired a scene in my second novel, The House with the Georgian Door. It made that deep an impression.
I’ve often said Strandhill is the unexpected gift I gave my family and myself without even realizing it when I added it to our itinerary. Sometimes the places you remember most are the ones you never expected to fall in love with, and for me, Strandhill will always be one of those places.
Hike Strandhill
In addition to being an amazing coastal town, Strandhill also offers visitors an array of choices when it comes to exploring and hiking this part of the Wild Atlantic Way. This is the perfect place for breathing in the fresh Atlantic air.
Located about 7 kilometers outside of Sligo town, Strandhill boasts several hiking opportunities that highlight the beauty of the area. Start the day with a gentle walk at Culleenamor and watch the sunrise. Or for a more ambitious trek, hike the Queen Maeve trail for a historic adventure that reaches the summit of Knocknarea.
Likewise, you can catch amazing sunset views along the Killaspugbrone Loop. If you plan well, it’s possible to witness awe-inspiring colors and sunset reflections as the sun slips behind the silhouette of the ruins of the ancient Killaspugbrone Church.
Savor Strandhill
Strandhill has acquired a reputation as a bit of a foodie mecca in County Sligo. Guests can choose from several dining options certain to please all palates. From hearty pub fare to pizza, baked goods and desserts, fine dining, and more, the flavors of Strandhill entice guests to dig in and enjoy.
For our visit, we had a tasty late-afternoon meal at The Venue, where the food and views are out of this world.
And, if you’re up for a fun evening, live music also fills the air in Strandhill, where a cracking trad session is never far away, and the pints run cold from the taps.
More Than a Beach Town
As we took in the views of the waves crashing onto the beach at Strandhill, it didn’t take long to discover it’s more than a beach town. Strandhill is one of Ireland’s best-known surfing destinations, and surfing is woven into the rhythm of everyday life here.
Beginners and experienced surfers come here to take a dip in the Atlantic and hang ten. There is a thriving and welcoming surf community in Strandhill that embraces the sport and happily shares this popular destination.

Strandhill, County Sligo is Calling
Every time I think about Strandhill, I remember sunshine along the promenade, tea and scones overlooking the Atlantic, walks along the beach beneath Knocknarea, and a village that welcomed us from the moment we arrived. Conversations like the one I had with Melanie remind me that it’s often the people we meet who deepen our connection to a place and turn a visit into a lasting memory.
I’m also reminded of just how completely we fell in love with Strandhill. We loved it so much that we returned the very next day, wanting more time to take it all in and hold onto those moments a little longer. It was a place I knew I wanted to capture, not just in photographs, but in my memories forever.
