Visiting Dublin with Kids? You’ll want to become a Viking

A woman sipping coffee outside
Hi, I’m Anna Marie. I’m a wife, mother, Irish dancer, and pug mom living in North Carolina. I also love to travel. Come along for the ride! If you see something you like, don’t be afraid to say, ‘Pull over and let me out.’
Traveling with kids means searching for fun and entertaining options to keep the youngsters entertained.  Finding a tour or attraction that’s both amusing for children and adults is a tough balance to strike.  In Ireland, Viking Splash Tours is the winning choice for visiting Dublin with kids.

What is a Viking Splash Tour?

A Viking Splash Tour is one of the most unique tours I’ve ever taken.

Passengers don Viking helmets, board an amphibious vehicle from the second World War called DUKWs, and tour Dublin’s City Center on land and sea.

What You’ll See

The tour begins across from St. Stephen’s Green, outside of Starbucks, and winds through historic Dublin.  The tour lasts about an hour and fifteen minutes and takes in most of Dublin’s big sites. As the Viking Splash website boasts, Vikings will see sights such as, “Trinity College, Christ Church Cathedral, Viking Dublin, Medieval Dublin, Georgian Dublin, Government buildings, the Dublin Docklands plus much, much more”

How Much of the Tour is on the Water?

The tour ventures along the city streets cross the Liffey River and splash down in the Grand Canal. Once the DUKW (Duck) arrives at the Grand Canal, life jackets are passed out and the tour takes to the water exploring sites along the canal.  I was excited to see the theater where Riverdance was originally performed and as a huge U2 fan, it was cool seeing the band’s recording studio from the water.

Why is the tour a Fun Way to see Dublin with Kids?

The guides are what make this tour entertaining.  When I asked my 11-year old what he liked most about the Viking Splash Tour, he didn’t hesitate, “The jokes.”

Not only do the guides impart a vast amount of information about the city, they do it with great humor.  Our guide was Anthony and he had us laughing throughout Dublin.  We especially enjoyed roaring at the unsuspecting Celts along our route.

Take Away

If you’re traveling to Ireland’s capital with kids and the thought of a boring, dry tour is unappealing, a Viking Splash Tour is a refreshingly unique alternative. It’s also a kid-friendly thing to do in Dublin.

Is it for everyone?

Maybe not, but if you like to learn and have a few laughs, this is a popular and fun way to see Dublin.
