Myrtle Beach SkyWheel: Your Front-Row Seat to the Best Sunset Views

An iconic landmark on the Grand Strand of South Carolina's famous Myrtle Beach, the SkyWheel offers a birds eye view of the beach, the ocean, and the surrounding areas. Travel along with PullOverandLetMeOut to find out why sunset is the ideal time to experience the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel.

Hi, I’m Anna Marie. I’m a wife, mother, Irish dancer, and pug mom living in North Carolina. I also love to travel. Come along for the ride! If you see something you like, don’t be afraid to say, ‘Pull over and let me out.’

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is an iconic landmark situated on the boardwalk, just steps from the beach and near all the popular attractions along the Grand Strand. Reaching heights of 200 feet in the air, this beloved attraction delivers a one-of-a-kind view and memorable beach experience for the entire family. However, it was the sunset that was the star of our visit. Here is why the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is your front-row seat to the best sunset views.

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel

We were in Myrtle Beach for a conference we were attending. Naturally, whenever I am at a conference, I try to squeeze in a fun itinerary item or two so that I get to enjoy something more than a hotel ballroom during my stay. Thus, I made it a point to take a late afternoon journey to the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel for a unique perspective and enjoyable activity.

42 glass-enclosed, climate controlled gondolas that seat up to six people; that’s what we found when we arrived at 1110 N. Ocean Blvd. We parked the car at the paid lot adjacent to the wheel and embarked on an enjoyable journey high above Myrtle Beach.

A Sunset Flight

I planned our visit to the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel for the early evening simply because that was the time our schedule made it possible. This turned out to be providential because it coincided with sunset.

November in Myrtle Beach is the off-season, but the sunsets are still spectacular. We boarded the gondola just prior to 5 pm and with each revolution, the sunset became more dramatic.

I especially enjoyed watching the sun dip progressively lower in the sky and the amazing colorful hues that painted the sky as we were perched high above the beach. It really is a breathtaking experience and incredible view.

The Little Extras

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel does a marvelous job of making the experience a fun time for everyone. For example, you will never be asked to ride in a gondola with strangers. Each ride is a private one for you and your party. Up to six people can fit in one gondola, maybe seven if there are children in your party.

Prior to boarding, there is a photo op. Pose for a pre-flight photograph, and your picture will be awaiting you when your flight is over. You aren’t obligated to purchase, but it’s fun posing, and you may find it’s the ideal souvenir to commemorate your visit.

The gondolas are climate controlled so you will be assured of a comfortable flight temperature wise. There is also a button inside that can notify the operators should you need to end your flight in the event of an emergency.

In addition to the standard tickets, the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel also offers VIP and Group experiences. Their group tickets offer flexibility and savings for an array of occasions and groups. You can visit their website to learn more about planning a group visit.

All of our gondolas are fully accessible with the exception of the VIP (#21 and #42). We can accommodate wheelchairs, scooters, etc.

Know Before You Go

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is open daily year-round, from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. However, you will want to confirm before visiting.

They monitor the weather and will shut down if the winds are sustained above 35-miles per hour or if there is lightening within a five mile radius. The operators also keep proper balance throughout the ride, so you may even notice a few empty gondolas even if there is a line waiting.

Tickets for the Myrtle Beach SkyWheel are available online or at the ticket office. For me and my husband it was $19.99 each. A flight lasts about 15 minutes and is typically 4 times around. Although, for our flight I counted five.

More Things to Do Close By

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is located footsteps away from the bustling Boardwalk so there is plenty to do and see prior to or after your flight. Whether it is food, shopping, or nightlife you’re looking for, there is something for everyone within close proximity.

If you’re hungry after your flight, you can “Fly & Dine,” at the LandShark Bar & Grill which is located right there at the SkyWheel.

For our visit, we popped into the historic Gay Dolphin Gift Cove. Known as the “nation’s largest gift shop,” it opened in 1946 and has been a fixture in Myrtle Beach since. At 26,000 square feet and with an average of 70,000 items in stock, the Gay Dolphin is something to behold!

What I Liked

The Myrtle Beach SkyWheel was a new experience for me. While it isn’t on the same level as the London Eye, it is a pretty impressive attraction. I am also not fond of heights. That being said, I never felt uneasy or uncomfortable during the flight. Quite the opposite. I felt safe and enclosed inside the gondola.

Additionally, it was thrilling seeing the remarkable colors of the sun setting along the Atlantic. With each revolution of the wheel, the sky took on a new look, putting on an incredible display.

Is it worth the price of admission?

That, I believe, is up the the individual. The ticket is a little pricey, but for the uniqueness of the attraction and the views, it is absolutely priceless.

Would I do it again?

Yes. It’s definitely worthwhile, especially if it is your first time. No matter the time of day or year you visit, there’s truly nothing else like it. The views and memories you’ll create are priceless.
