While I’ve explored countless towns, I’ve curated a list of 20 that stole my heart – not a definitive ranking, just some favorites to share. When I visited, I had the pleasure of taking the annual plantation and townhouse tour, which offers visitors a glimpse into the town’s fascinating history. During our visit, we took a thrilling jeep tour to see the horses in their natural habitat, which was a highlight of our trip. We also enjoyed our stay in the peaceful town, which offers a welcome respite from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The town also offers plenty of outdoor activities nearby, including hiking and waterfalls, to enjoy during the day. In the evening, couples can stroll through the charming streets and enjoy a romantic dinner at one of the town’s many restaurants.

Cullman, Alabama, is a quaint southern town with an interesting history and plenty of things to see and do.

One of the most surprising attractions in Cullman is the Ave Maria Grotto, a four-acre park featuring 125 miniature replicas of famous religious structures from around the world. The grotto was built by a Benedictine monk and is considered one of the most impressive displays of folk art in the country. I was truly blown away by this and can only say, you simply must see it to believe it!

Littleton, North Carolina, in Halifax County, is an amiable small southern town and an unexpected destination for a memorable evening of dining and theater.

Located on the border of North Carolina and Virginia, Littleton is a quaint town that provides a surprising and vibrant dining scene, with options ranging from classic southern cuisine to international flavors.

The recently renovated Lakeland Cultural Arts Center is a must-visit destination for art lovers and theater enthusiasts, featuring a range of performances and exhibitions. Excitingly, the town is expanding its cultural offerings with the addition of an outdoor amphitheater, promising even more entertainment options for visitors and locals alike.

This sleepy town on the banks of Lake Gaston also offers a wide range of outdoor activities for guests to enjoy year-round, making Littleton a delightful small-town retreat brimming with possibilities. READ MORE

17. Yorktown, Virginia

Packed with history, this friendly small town in the tidewater region of Virginia has a little something for everyone.

History buffs will drink in Yorktown’s colonial heritage and significant Revolutionary War and Civil War history. Likewise, this picturesque town also offers a range of dining and shopping options in addition to entertainment that is certain to please every member of your traveling group.

The appealing Riverwalk Landing is a beehive of activity dotted with shops, boutiques, and dining and is an enjoyable stroll. We stopped in for lunch at the Water Street Grill and enjoyed a scrumptious seafood meal with an amazing view of the river.

Situated in close proximity to Colonial Williamsburg and Jamestown, this is a stop not-to-be-missed along the riverfront. It’s one of Virgina’s best-kept secrets. READ MORE

18. Southern Pines, North Carolina

Tucked in the Sandhills of North Carolina is the delightful town of Southern Pines. Also known as the Home of American Golf, Southern Pines is a romantic railroad town that offers visitors a delightful mix of shops, entertainment, and dining options. 

Visitors enjoy strolling the magnolia-lined idyllic historic downtown area which straddles the railroad track. Dotting both sides of the tracks is a melange of boutiques, restaurants, museums, and antique shops beckoning guests to step inside. 

Venture outside of the main downtown area and discover the numerous scenic horse farms adding to Southern Pine’s beauty. 

During our visit, we stopped at the Southern Pines Brewing Co. for a flight of delicious craft beer, perfectly capping off an enjoyable day exploring this charming North Carolina gem. READ MORE

19. Cherokee, North Carolina

Nestled in the heart of the Smoky Mountains, Cherokee, North Carolina is a picturesque mountain town that offers visitors a unique and rich Native American heritage.

The town is home to the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and visitors can learn about their culture and history at the Museum of the Cherokee Indians or enjoy a live performance at the outdoor Mountainside Theatre.

With stunning natural beauty and fascinating cultural experiences, Cherokee is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to explore the charms of the North Carolina mountains. I was fascinated and deeply moved by my visit to Cherokee, as it was both educational and emotionally stirring. A winning combination! READ MORE

20. Brookneal, Virginia

We fell in love with Brookneal, Virginia. This charismatic little town on the shores of the Staunton River in south central, Virginia was the final home of American founding father, Patrick Henry. His home, Red Hill, is a vital part of this thriving small community.

Additionally, Brookneal offers visitors a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Visitors can explore the town’s quaint shops and restaurants, or take in the scenic beauty of the surrounding countryside. There are also excellent outdoor adventure opportunities such as canoeing or camping on the river.

We discovered an incredible small winery, Sans Soucy Vineyards, and spent an amazing evening watching the colorful sunset transform the sky into a palette of pinks until giving way to brilliant starlight. It was awesome! READ MORE
